Because every step is done by hand by individual craftsmen.
In this video, you will first see an artist working on the design for a scarf. Then you will see the process for screening the 10th and final color on a scarf. As the gentleman says, if the printing of any of the colors is off, the scarf is destroyed.
In this video, you will see the intricate process of hand rolling the hem on an Hermes scarf. Each scarf is a work of art!

Yes I did and know I know why - amazing.
I was fortunate enough to see an exhibition of Hermes craftsmen and women in Madrid recently. It was incredible to see each person at work and the skill and art intertwining in their craft- they had bag makers, saddlemakers, scarf screen printers, scark pattern engravers, watch makers, jewellers, porcelein painters etc all at work and interacting close up with the audience- it was magical!
That is amazing, I loved watching how they made these scarves, so much patience in the hand-rolling and stitching, as well as in the drafting of the design.
Beautiful!
